The Depot

The Depot is at 506 W. Michigan St. Housed in an 1892 railroad depot, the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center features living history exhibits, four museums and Depot Square, a re-creation of Duluth as it appeared 1910-20.
The Lake Superior Railroad Museum houses a large collection of railroad cars and locomotives dating 1860-1960, including the first locomotive to come to Minnesota and one of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives ever built. Among the historical displays at the Saint Louis County Historical Society are the Ojibwe Room, containing artwork and artifacts.
The Duluth Art Institute features contemporary works by regional, national and international artists. Hands-on exhibits urge the younger set to explore foreign cultures as well as the world around them at the Duluth Children's Museum. The Forest History room tells the story of the early years of the lumber industry through real-life stories and videotapes. Veterans Hall presents artifacts and stories from all the wars in which the United States has engaged. The Immigration Waiting Room, where many area settlers were processed, is preserved in its original state.

Glensheen Historic Estate

Glensheen Historic Estate is 5 mi. n. on SR 61 at 3300 London Rd. This was the 1908 estate of attorney, mining entrepreneur and state legislator Chester A. Congdon. The 22-acre property on Lake Superior includes formal gardens and a Jacobean mansion containing original furnishings. Carriages and sleighs are displayed in the carriage house. A separate tour of the third floor and attic--covering an additional six bedrooms and explaining the house's construction--is available.

Great Lakes Aquarium

Great Lakes Aquarium is on the bayfront at 353 Harbor Dr. The nation's only all-freshwater aquarium explores Lake Superior and the creatures that live in and near it. Visitors can learn about the formation of the Great Lakes, speak with divers as they feed the fish, raise and lower locks, and pilot a virtual ore boat under the Aerial Lift Bridge.
There also are interactive exhibits, numerous aquariums and 70 species of fish, as well as birds and river otters. In addition to its sea life, the aquarium offers views of the bridge and arriving and departing freighters.
Food is available. Allow 1 hour minimum.

Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is at 902 E. First St. The museum features original handwritten documents and manuscripts covering such topics as art, history, literature, music and science in exhibits that change every 3 months. The collection includes a draft of the Bill of Rights, George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation, Handel's "Messiah" by Beethoven, Wagner's "Wedding March" and the writings of Galileo, Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.

Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center is .2 mi. e. on Canal Park Dr. in Canal Park next to The Aerial Lift Bridge (see attraction listing). Exhibits portray the history of Lake Superior shipping and the Army Corps of Engineers. Among the displays are replicas of ship cabins, an operating steam engine and scale models of ships. Slides and videotapes focus on shipping activity on the Great Lakes. The museum also contains science exhibits.

Lake Superior Zoo is w. at jct. 72nd Ave. W. and Grand Ave. Hundreds of animals from all over the world include such endangered species as the Siberian tiger and the snow leopard. Polar bears, bats, kangaroos, snakes and birds are among the residents. A primate conservation center is on the 16-acre grounds.
